ABSTRACT:The Bird in Hand Gold Project (BIHGP) deposit lies in the Woodside goldfield of the Adelaide Hills, approximately 35km east of Adelaide and 1km east of the town of Woodside. Historical mining took place over several phases in the period 1882-1897, with re-processing of tailings in the early-1900’s, producing in the order of 30,000oz from BIH and several smaller mines nearby at grades of 10-15g/t. An attempt was made to re-establish the mine in 1934-35, with the bottom of the existing shafts being extended to around 125m deep and several levels rehabilitated and extended. Reports indicate however that the mine was determined to be uneconomic to extend further at the time. The pumps installed in 1934 had a capacity of 6-7ML/day (75l/s) and took almost a year to dewater 90m or so of workings. The site was subsequently used to provide water to the nearby Woodside Army camp and for various military exercises, until around 1950. The shafts are thought to have been filled in around when the processing battery was demolished in 1957. The site of the main historical workings is now a state timber reserve.
