ABSTRACT:The Lac des Iles (LDI) Mine is owned and operated by Lac des Iles Mines Ltd. (LDIM), a wholly owned subsidiary of North American Palladium (NAP). The mine site is located 106 kilometers northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario (Figure 1-1). The mine has been in production since 1993, beginning with open pit mining of the Roby Zone. A new mill was constructed in 2003 and underground production began in 2006 via ramp access to the Roby Zone. Production was continuous until late 2008, when the mine was placed on care and maintenance due to declining metal prices. Exploration drilling continued during the shutdown and delineated the first significant resource for the Offset Zone, considered an extension of the Roby Zone but displaced by a major fault (the Offset Fault). In 2010, production resumed at LDI and a major expansion to the underground mine began with the sinking of a production shaft to the 825 meter level to access the Offset Zone. The shaft and the associated ore hoisting system were commissioned at the end of 2013. The LDI site also consists of a concentrator and a tailings management facility with an annual capacity of 4.5 million tonnes. In 2016, LDI processed 2.1 million tonnes (Mt) of ore at a head grade of 3.0 g/t of palladium, which included a mix of underground ore and lower-grade surface stockpiles. In Q3 2016, the Company began converting underground production from a blasthole mining method in the Offset Zone to a sub-level shrinkage (SLS) mining method.
